Rising from the Embers – Land and Cultural Festival is a collaborative event between the Wollotuka Institute at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Local Land Services.
The unique 2-day Land and Cultural festival will raise awareness and celebrate the rich Aboriginal Cultural Heritage of the Hunter Region.
The festival focuses on increasing community access to cultural heritage and local land management activities as well as engaging with a variety of local service providers, entertainers and cultural knowledge holders to deliver an interactive educational experience.
The title was chosen as part of the focus on the low burning embers that maintain heat in a fire, a link to the cultural practice of slow burning natural bushes. A reference to the ongoing fire within Aboriginal and Islander people and communities in keeping culture and identity ongoing.
As 2020 was also a monumental year beginning with the major impact of bushfires for all our communities.
The planning committee felt the festival would bring together community to highlight our resilience and with this – Rise from the Embers was chosen to highlight Aboriginal and Islander culture in healing our country.
This was fortuitous as this year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Healing Country’.
